Cesme Resort InformationToday the town is a popular holiday resort with excellent accommodations and restaurants. Shopping for the finest quality carpets, leather goods, and many more Turkish delights are a really treat as you stroll the cobble streets . At night, a lively, fun atmosphere pervades the town, especially in the restaurants, cafes, bars and discos along the promenade. Yachts can be hired to explore the peninsula's splendid coastline. Also, ferries make the run from "Cesme" to Venice on a weekly basis. The beauty of Cesme from the words of an English couple who moved to Cesme three years ago, "The resort retains the traditional feel of the Turkish life yet offers the modern facilities we require and what we can't get here we take a small journey to the city of Izmir, "it is perfect". Cesme is a village located at the tip of a peninsula, part of the Gulf of Izmir. This fishermen's village (which name means "Fountain") counts abundant healing springs and thermal waters in its area.
Cesme is dominated by a XIVth centry Genoese fortress. Though it is becoming a popular holiday resort especially for surfers, it has been able to preserve its Turkish characteristics.
HISTORY
Cesme, former Kyus, was found in 196 BC by the Romans. It was both an important sea port and the home to famous wine producers of the Aegean region.
Today Cesme counts a population of 65.000 plus 250.000 seasonal migrant workers during the wine harvest period.
Cesme is also bound to ancient "Erytrai" (20km N-E). According to Pausanias, Erytrai is founded by Cretan settlers under the rule of Erytros ("The Red") who gave his name to the city. Today, one can still very well trace the city walls. In 1966, after the discovery of Mycenian ceramics, Erytrai has been subject to archaeological explorations.
BEACHES
White sand beaches, cooled by agreeable summer breezes, stretch in the neighbourhood. You can escape from town life while practicing you favourite water sports.
NIGHT LIFE
Evenings one can enjoy a "raki" at the waterside or visit one of the numerous bars and discos in and around town. For music lovers, a tour at the Inkilas Caddesi (street) is recommended
PRACTICAL BANKS
Open Monday-Friday, 09:00-12:00 and 13:30-17:00. It is possible to withdraw money from the A.T.M.?s yet only in Turkish Liras.
PRACTICAL POST OFFICE
The post office is open daily from 08:30 till 17:30 in winter month and till 23:00 in summer months.
All change operations can be operated in the post office.
Telephones between 22:30 and 08:00 and on Sunday are cheaper but not in hotels..
PRACTICAL SHOPPING
Alongside the attractive promenade, shops offer a wide choice of value-for-money jewellery, leather, carpets, clothes and other souvernies. The biggest local market, offering a Greek atmosphere, is held in Sifne at 15km from Cesme
PRACTICAL TRANSPORTATION
The cheapest way to go from here to there is the dolmus (collective taxi) which stops everywhere to collect or deposit passengers. Daily from 07:00 till 00:00 depending their itinerary. Prices are being set by the authorities.
Another very used means of transportation is the taxi (all yellow cars with controlled taximeter). More expensive than the dolmus but unique transportation available at night (beware for the night tariffs).
